Atypus affinis (sometimes known as the 'Purse Web Spider') is the only British spider with downward pointing fangs (the fangs of all other species move from side to side). It lives in a closed tubular web, much of which is underground. In Cornwall, Atypus affinis should be looked for under rocks on the coast. It may also turn up inland on well-drained unimproved grassland, especially in sandy soil.

Atypus affinis is known from three sites on the Isles of Scilly, Kynance Cove and Coverack on the Lizard Peninsula, and Chapel Porth on the north coast near St. Agnes. It was found most recently at Kynance Cove in 1990.
