The Natural World in Close Up

Collembola of Britain and Ireland
These maps record the presence of Collembola in the 10 km by 10 km Ordnance Survey Grid squares of Britain and Ireland (=hectads). For the maps of individual species, all published records are included as Green dots. Red dots indicate that presence has been confirmed by examination of microscope slides in the Natural History Museum, London (NHML), specimens in my reference collection, or material sent to me by recorders. Note that Orkney and Shetland have been relocated from their true geographic positions. The maps were produced with the DMAP computer program developed by Alan Morton [http://www.dmap.co.uk].
Dots will be added to the existing maps as new localities are discovered. The date on which records were most recently added is shown in the title adjacent to the species name on each map. Each species has been allocated a code number that will never change, and a five letter abbreviation usually made up of the first two letters of the genus in capitals and first three letters of the species name in lower case. For example, the code and abbreviation for
Brachystomella parvula is 001/BRpar). The five letter abbreviation is subject to alteration when species are moved between genera but the fixed number code will ensure that species can be tracked over time, irrespective of name changes.
The checklist below includes changes arising from recent taxonomic decisions, new synonyms, and the discovery of several misidentifications in the NHML Collembola collections. Several 'species' are undoubtedly complexes of two or more species. However, I have decided to adopt a conservative approach until fresh UK/Eire material can be examined to resolve some of the more contentious species boundaries. Synonyms (*) are listed below each species name.
In most cases, genus and species names have been updated to conform with those used in the publications listed below. The arrangement of Families and Subfamilies follows the scheme of Deharveng (2004).

Superfamily Onychiuroidea

Family Onychiuridae

[NOTE: Although splitting the Onychiuridae into several genera can be criticised, it does have the advantage of separating out the definite species groups within the old definitions of Protaphorura (post-antennal organ (PAO) with simple vesicles) and Onychiurus (PAO with complex vesicles). Generic boundaries are by no means settled and further changes are likely in the future. The genera used in this list are those of Pomorski (1988) in his Synopsis on the Onychiurinae of Poland. The list below represents my first attempt to clarify a messy situation by not confirming the presence of a species on the checklist ('NO CONFIRMED UK/EIRE RECORDS'] unless it can be supported by a specimen in good condition. It is my opinion that several of these are not good species (especially Protaphorura sp. described by Gisin). The checklist is by no means 'cast in stone' and undoubtedly contains errors. I am certain that some of the species described by Gisin had already been seen (and in some cases described) by Bagnall. However, the descriptions of both authors lack the detail expected of modern accounts and most of their type specimens are in very poor condition. A thorough revision is needed of all Bagnall's and Gisin's 'species'. I am grateful to Arne Fjellberg and Jacek Pomorski for their valuable comments on this list, although they do not agree entirely with my conclusions for which I am fully responsible.]

Genus Protaphorura Absolon 1901

[NOTE: Numerous species within the Protaphorura armata 'group' have been described (simple vesicles in PAO, furca present as vestigial flap). All the 'species' recorded in the literature are listed below. Synonyms are based on the checklist of Kloet & Hincks (1964), Fjellberg (1998) and Pomorski (1998), and some of my own observations. However, after examining more than 1000 specimens of Protaphorura in the NHML slide collection (including all of Bagnall's surviving material), I have come to the conclusion that it is impossible to reliably allocate more than three names to these UK/Eire specimens on the basis of characters used by Gisin and others. The pseudocelli formula, presence or absence of seta s' on abd5, and the degree of convergence of lines drawn through the two pairs of setae anterior to the anal spines are too variable. That is not to say that there are not more than three good species of Protaphorura in UK/Eire but that the morphological characters that are currently used to separate them are not 100% reliable. Bring on the molecules!]
